Colonoscopy
For patients with a low or average risk of colon cancer, a colonoscopy screening is recommended for those aged 50 and older. Colonoscopies are outpatient procedures that allow a doctor to closely examine the inside of the large intestine. During a colonoscopy, a flexible tube with a camera and a light can identify polyps, which the doctor can remove to reduce the risk of colon cancer.
Symptoms of colon cancer, also called colorectal cancer, can include:
- Discomfort and cramping
- Blood in the stool
- Rectal bleeding
- Changes in bowel habits
- Fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
Always check with a gastroenterologist if you have these symptoms.
